Othos is a town on the island of Karpathos, Greece, the
second largest of the twelve islands in the Dodecanese group located in the
southeastern Aegean Sea. Othos, at an
elevation of 520 meters (1700 feet), is the highest town in Karpathos and
offers panoramic views, some of the most striking on the island. The
town of Othos is located approximately 12 km northwest of Pigadia, the capital
town and harbor of Karpathos. Othos
consists of Othos Village and the nearby settlements of Stes and Kallenes. The town features a small Folklore Museum where visitors can see
old paintings and photographs, musical instruments, wood carvings, and other
items that present the traditions of Karpathos island, as well as those of the
village of Othos itself. Othos is renowned
for its sweet red wine, its excellent tavernas, and its traditional festivals,
the most celebrated of which is held every year in the last days of July in honor
of Agios Panteleimonas.
